This tree more than likely died because of the bark being stripped along with any damage to the actual trunk wood. A lovely tree that never got the chance to reach its full potential.

Shame. All I can think about when I hear about these happenings is what the heck is the owner thinking? Complete disregard? Probably. Because to some people the word "tree" don't mean much.
