Black Mulberry Streatham Common
Black Mulberry Streatham Common Cement to top right of ivy |
Came across this old gnarly Black Mulberry. Definitely been abused and neglected over the years, as with a lot of old trees it looks like an old cavity was filled with cement ???? don't really understand the idea behind that practice but thankfully its not something done today.
Loved the old stems and the way years ago how they had almost tore right off the main stem but because the attachment was very low on the main stem the lower lateral branches supported the stem and the cambium stayed attached too.
Despite all its problems pretty much all the limbs were alive and had buds ready to open.

Rosendale Road, Chestnut tree
Tree had fallen early morning. No indication of problems can be seen in canopy of tree. Cavity on trunk has years of callous wood, after cutting trunk above and below cavity it was easy to see the cavity is the start point for the soft soggy wood. The wood above the cavity was solid although the tree had walled off the decay.

Mervan Rd, Hazel tree
No real indication why this stem split. Wind assisted,
Stem removal
Thin the tree a bit to assist wind penetration

Holmewood Gardens, Sorbus Tree
Growing on a lean and rubbing on the perimeter fence. This tree will have to be removed before the trunk snaps at the rubbing location. Canopy will probably grow to a size that wind throw will result in failure of the trunk at that point.
